Streuobstwiesen umgeben das freistehende Einfamilienhaus am Ortsrand von Laatsch, einer Fraktion von Mals. Dieser außergewöhnliche, singuläre Bau benötigt einfach eine gewisse Freifläche um sich herum, die seine Wirkung als Merkzeichen entfaltet. Der Blick zu den beiden Kirchtürmen von Laatsch verstärkt die gestalterische Gegensätzlichkeit im Dorf. Das weitgehend geschlossene Obergeschoss beherbergt die Schlafräume mit einem quadratischen Grundriss, der darunter mit Glasfassaden die Wohnräume umfasst. So scheint der weithin weiß leuchtende „Kasten“ aus Beton über allem zu schweben und kragt weit über die schlanken Stützen aus. Um dem verglasten Erdgeschoss Sichtschutz zu gewähren, wurden ortstypische Natursteinmauern freistehend mit Abstand vorgesetzt. Ein solches Haus setzt selbstbewusstes Wohnverständnis voraus.

This unusual, singular building simply needs a certain amount of empty space around it, in order to allow a full appreciation of it. The view of both of the church towers in Laatsch heightens the contrast with the village. The mainly enclosed upper floor houses the bedrooms in a square layout, which encompasses the living rooms below with glass facades. With its far-reaching white glow, the “box” made from concrete seems to sway over everything and projects upwards from the slender supports. In order to provide the glass ground floor with some privacy freestanding stone walls typical for the area were built a short distance away from the house. Such a house makes one self-conscious of one’s living conditions.

Questo edificio fuori dal comune ha infatti bisogno di un’ampia superficie libera che ne metta in risalto la natura di segno caratteristico. Il collegamento visivo con i due campanili della parrocchiale rafforza la contrapposizione formale tra la casa e il resto del paese. Il piano superiore quasi privo di aperture racchiude le camere da letto a pianta quadrata mentre in quello inferiore, con i fronti in gran parte vetrati, sono disposti gli ambienti di soggiorno. Il parallelepipedo di cemento, di un biancore che abbaglia già da lontano, poggia con un forte aggetto sui sottili pilastri cilindrici e sembra quasi librarsi a mezz’aria. Per garantire la privacy anche al pianterreno, alle vetrate sono anteposte, a una certa distanza, massicce pareti continue in pietra locale. Una casa di questo genere presuppone una concezione dell’abitare che si potrebbe quasi definire orgogliosa.
